Karti confronted with Indrani in Mumbai jail

| | Mumbai/New Delhi

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday confronted alleged bribe acceptor Karti Chidambaram with one million dollar bribe giver Indrani Mukerjea at Mumbai’s Byculla prison in the INX Media bribery case.

Karti, who was brought to the jail in central Mumbai around 11.15 am by a six-member team of CBI, confronted with Indrani for more than four hours and returned to Delhi in the evening.

The investigating agency is expected to summon Karti’s father and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram soon to question him on the alleged illegalities committed by him to favour son’s deal with INX Media promoters Indrani and Peter Mukerjea.

Giving details of the meeting between Karti and Indrani, CBI officials said the two were brought face-to-face and questioned by the CBI team for about four hours. Indrani and husband Peter are lodged in the jail in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case. Both admitted to investigators that they have given one million dollar to Karti’s companies and met his father, who is very much aware of the deal.

According to officials, Karti is still in an “arrogant mood”. They applied ‘tilak’ and gave sweets to Karti on Holi morning. When informed on Saturday evening to get ready for the confrontation with Indrani in Mumbai, Karti argued with CBI sleuths to bring Indrani to Delhi. He was curious to know the details of his Chartered Accountant Bhaskar Raman, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate(ED) and now in judicial custody.

While entering the Mumbai prison, Karti waved at the media persons who had assembled outside the high security prison. The doors of the prisons were shut and no other person from outside was allowed to enter the premises when the two were questioned, the official said. The confrontation was recorded in video.

The CBI team came out of the prison around 3.15 pm and Karti put up a brave face and waved again at the media persons while standing on the footboard of a car being used by the agency. He was asked by the CBI officials to get down from the footboard before they left the jail premises.

The trial court has allowed CBI custody of Karti up to March 6 and expected to extend further for a few more days.

The CBI and ED had registered FIR in the case in May 2017 and also conducted raids against Karti and companies linked to him. Karti had been playing hide and seek game with agencies forcing the CBI to issue Look Out Circular (LOC) against him in October 2017. Instead of appearing before the investigators, Karti moved the Supreme Court against the summons. However, the SC had ordered Karti appear before CBI before arguing on the matter.

As per the CBI and ED FIRs, in 2006, INX Media got FIPB clearance for only Rs 5 crore of foreign investments. But the TV channel illegally brought more than Rs 305 crore from Mauritius-registered companies in a dubious way. Income Tax authorities found the irregularity and issued notice to Indrani and husband Peter Mukherjea. Thereafter, the duo approached Karti, then Finance Minister Chidambaram’s son for post facto FIPB clearance.

Chidambaram, as head of FIPB, allegedly gave post facto clearance to the INX Media. Karti’s firm’s Chess Management Services and Advantage Strategic Consulting allegedly got the kickback of around Rs 5crore, said the chargesheets.

The INX media scam was unearthed during the joint raid of ED and Income Tax in December 2015 at Karti’s companies in connection with Aircel-Maxis scam. The investigators seized the hard disks from the Karti’s firms, unearthing details of the family’s properties and hotels and farmhouses in 14 countries and 21 undeclared foreign bank accounts.
