Following its drubbing in the Tripura polls, the CPM, at its 25th state conference on Monday, urged all anti-BJP and anti-Trinamool Congress forces to unite and “create the broadest possible platform to prevent attacks on democracy and secular fabric of the country”.
This is in contrast to the draft political resolution that the party had adopted last month. There, while the focus was on defeating BJP and its allies by rallying all secular and democratic forces, CPM had ruled out any understanding or electoral alliance with the Congress. On Monday, however, the party passed a resolution that made no mention of Congress not being a part of such an anti-BJP force. The four-day CPM state conference began in Kolkata on Monday.
CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, former party general secretary Prakash Karat and politburo member Brinda Karat attended the meeting. After the end of the conference, the resolution is likely to be sent to the CPM central committee for inclusion as an amendment to the draft political resolution, which will be taken up for discussion and final approval at the 22nd party congress in April.
The resolution, which was placed for discussion on Monday, stated: “Firstly, there is a need to increase the party’s own organisational strength. Secondly, there is a need to strengthen the Left unity. Thirdly, there is a need to unite all Left parties other than those in Left Front. Fourthly, there is a need to unite all anti-TMC and anti-BJP forces, social organisations and intellectuals and bring them under the broadest possible platform to prevent attacks on democracy and secular fabric of the country.”
At the inaugural session of the state conference in Pramod Dasgupta Bhawan, Sitaram Yechury emphasised on the need to form the broadest platform of secular and democratic forces. However, he did not mention Congress. Calling for a biggest possible Left unity, he asked the state CPM to strengthen its organisation.
“The country is passing through a challenging period, as the ruling BJP-RSS combine is trying to divide the nation on the basis of religion, caste and creed. There is a need to have the broadest platform of secular and democratic forces to stop BJP and RSS and put an end to its communal politics,” said Yechury. He reiterated that the country needs alternative policies and not leaders. “We have to create an alternative to the current government at the Centre on the basis of alternative policies to remove them from power,” said Yechury.
After discussions on the formation of broadest platform of secular and democratic forces, a resolution was placed for a debate. While the district committees of Nadia and North 24 Parganas were in favour of the resolution, the East Burdwan committee was against it. Leaders of Nadia and North 24 Parganas said that alliance with other secular and democratic parties were needed to defeat the BJP. In the next three days, the party will present its organisational report and hold discussions on the draft political resolution.
