The Army has said it killed one local militant and his three “accomplices” after an Army patrol came under fire in Shopian district on Sunday evening.
A Srinagar-based Army spokesman said a joint mobile vehicle check post was fired upon by militants near Pohan in Shopian around 8 p.m. “In retaliatory firing, one terrorist was killed and a weapon has been found on him,” said the spokesman.
The slain militant was identified as Shahid Ahmad Dar, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, a resident of Jamnagri, Shopian.
The Army said his three accomplices, whom the spokesman described as “over-ground workers”, were also “found dead” in the car apparently used by the militant.
The Army could not immediately furnish the details of the circumstances in which the accomplices were killed.
Locals identified the deceased as Suhail Khalil Wagay, Muhammad Shahid Khan and Shahnawaz Ahmad Wagay, all resident of Shopian district. The police could not immediately confirm their names.
However, there were no reports of any casualty to the security forces in the “cross-fire”.
The Army said local police have started legal formalities. Locals claimed internet service was snapped in the area.
Shopian, around 60 km away from Srinagar, was on the edge this year ever since two civilians were killed near an encounter site on January 10 and three civilians died in the Army firing in Ganowpora village during a stone pelting incident on January 27.
