The BJP state election committee of Himachal would meet here tomorrow to recommend a candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat from the state falling vacant on April 2, 2018. The six-year term of Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda would lapse in April this year and he was likely to be renominated, party sources said, adding that there was no other name under consideration. The BJP has 44 members in the 68-member House and the victory of its candidate is a foregone conclusion. The notification for the election would be announced tomorrow, with the last date of filing nominations being March 12.
Scrutiny would take place on March 13, last date of withdrawal is March 15 and the election, if necessary, would take place on March 23, according to a programme released by the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat. There are three Rajya Sabha members from Himachal and presently senior Congress leader Viplov Thakur and Deputy Leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma represent the state. The term of Viplov Thakur and Anand Sharma would expire in April 2020 and April 2022 respectively.
