Nagaland election: Chief Minister TR Zeliang's party Naga People's Front and its ally won 29 seats

Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang, who heads the Naga People's Front or NPF that won 29 seats along with its ally in the assembly election, said he will not resign. Mr Zeliang said he would meet with BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss government formation in Nagaland.

NPF chairman Shurhozolie Liezietsu has written to Amit Shah, saying they were "still friends".

"I was thinking he (Mr Zeliang) will resign," Nagaland Governor PB Acharya told reporters, adding the chief minister came to meet him today.

The NPF in alliance with the BJP was in power in Nagaland, before its former leader Neiphiu Rio broke away to form his own party, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party or NDPP.

Mr Rio's party NDPP had contested the Nagaland election on an understanding with the BJP that they would be allies, even though the BJP was a partner of the ruling NPF government in Nagaland.
