Vasco: Panic erupted on Swatantra Path at New Vaddem in Vasco on Saturday night, when the siren of a scheduled multi-state bank started ringing suddenly.
Pradyum Shelkar, who lives in the vicinity, said the siren started at 11.30pm on Saturday. “The entire neighbourhood ran to the site. We panicked as we didn’t know what had happened, whether there was a fire or a dacoity,” he said.
People immediately called the Vasco police. PSI Vikas Deykar rushed to the site. When the police contacted the bank manager he said he could not come and instead, sent his assistant with a team.
However, despite being offered adequate police protection, the team refused to open the premises and locate the fault. They only inspected it from the outside and left.
People in the vicinity were inconvenienced the entire night long due to the noise. To make matters worse, on Sunday morning, too, bank officials failed to take any action and the siren continued.
Customers of the bank, too, panicked.Expressing concern, a customer, Nilima Narvekar, a beautician by profession, said “We are concerned about what has gone wrong and fear for our savings.”
Officials finally managed to turn off the blaring siren around 8pm on Sunday.
