Women in Northeast are financially independent: Manipur guv

The women in the Northeast region is "not a neglected lot", they are financially independent, Manipur Governor Najma Heptulla said here today. In Manipur, there is a market, where 5000-6000 women work every day to support their families, she said after inaugurating the 'Emerging North East 2018' Expo at Shilpgram here. The daylong expo, organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), gave farmers, agri-preneurs, entrepreneurs and experts from the food industry from across the Northeast a platform to interact and generate business in the region. "I am happy to see that women are participating in large numbers in today's event. We do get to see that women are being neglected (in certain parts of the country), but in the Northeast, the case is very different. Women here are financially independent." The governor, however, rued that development still eludes parts of the Northeast. "Barring Assam, there are hardly any industries in the region.

The focus should be on bringing about industrialization in other states too. That can be made possible once the communication between these states is improved." In the past one-and-a-half years, the government has introduced many projects for the benefit of the people and are even holding events to promote the schemes, she asserted. BJP MP Bijoya Chakravarty, who was also present at the event, said, "Northeast now has better connectivity. We should apply scientific technology in various sectors for the all-round development." ASSOCHAM Secretary General D S Rawat said his organisation will be handholding entrepreneurs from technology, finance and marketing sectors to bring about development in the region and work closely with the state governments and central government agencies.
