Fire guts garment, chemical units

No casualties reported yet, extent of damage yet to be ascertained

Several garment and chemical manufacturing units were damaged in a fire in Andheri late on Friday night, a senior civic official said on Saturday.

The blaze erupted in one of the units and spread to the other units in Asalfa village around 11.45 p.m. Efforts to douse it were still under way, the official from the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

So far, no casualties have been reported and the number of units gutted in the fire is yet to be ascertained, the official said. Eight fire engines, six jumbo tankers and five jetties have been pressed into service, he said. The cause of the blaze was not yet known.
