BJP ends 25 year of Left rule in Tripura, gets absolute majority; Nagaland, Meghalaya return hung assemblies |

The BJP has secured absolute majority in Tripura by winning 35 Assembly seats in the 60-member house. Its ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura, (IPFT) bagged 8 seats. Thus both the parties won 43 seats on Saturday.
The BJP has ended 25 year of the Left rule in the state. The party had no presence in last Assembly.
The Congress has failed to open its account in the state. CPI(M) has managed to win just 16 seats. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar won from Dhanpur seat.
Out of 60 constituencies, polling was held for 59 seats as By-poll is going to be held for Charilam constituency, due to death of a candidate. Out of 60 seats, 20 constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Tribe and 10 for Scheduled Caste.
AIR correspondent reports, the results has evinced that the CPIM has received an erosion in its tribal stronghold pockets that has 20 seats as reserved for scheduled tribes. BJP-IPFT alliance has snatched away 13 seats from the 20-seats pockets.
Similarly, Congress, which has won 10 seats in 2013 polls, has failed to open its account this time. BJP state President Biplab Kumar Deb has won Banamalipur seat defeating his nearest rival Amal Chakraborty by over 9,500 votes.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has also won from Dhanpur. State PWD Minister and CPIM candidate Badal Choudhary has won from Hrishyamukh seat. While CPIM candidate and Agriculture Minister Aghore Deb Barma has lost in Asharambari constituency.
Party sources indicated that the BJP will form the new government in Tripura by 10th March.
Meghalaya and Nagaland threw up hung Assemblies. In Meghalaya, Congress has emerged as the single largest party winning 21 seats in the 60-member Assembly while National Peoples Party won 19 seats, United Democratic Party 6, People's Democratic Front 4, Independents 3, BJP and Hill State People's Democratic Party 2 each, NCP and KHNAM one each. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma retained the Ampati and also won Songsak seat.
In Nagaland, according to the Election Commission of India, the BJP and its ally National Democratic Progressive Party together won 28 seats. However, Naga Peoples Front Party emerged as the largest party winning 27 seats. National Peoples Party won two, while JD(U) and Independent one seat each.
Chief Minister and NPF candidate T R Zeliang won from Peren seat against NDPP's Iherie Ndang. NDPP Chief Neiphiu Rio was declared elected unopposed from the Northern Angami-II constituency. Former Nagaland Chief Minister K.L.Chishi, a BJP candidate, lost Atoizu seat.
All the three Northeastern states have a 60-member Assembly, but polling was held for 59 seats each. Polling to Charilam (st) seat in Tripura was postponed till the 12th of this month due to the death of CPIM candidate Ramendra Narayan Debbarma.
In Meghalaya, the election was countermanded in Williamnagar in the wake of the killing of NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma in an IED blast.
