Jaipur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet 250 young women, who opted for permanent family planning after having one or two girl child, during his visit to
Jhunjhunu.
Modi is set visit Jhunjhunu on March 8 for the pan-India launch of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (BBBP) programme, which currently focuses on awareness and advocacy campaign, multi-sectoral action in select 161 districts, enabling girls’ education and effective enforcement of Pre-Conception Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
The BBBP will now cover 640 districts (as per the 2011 census) in the country to bring about a deeper positive impact on child sex ratio.
“At least 250 women, including mothers who decided on family planning after having one or two girl child, will meet the PM. These are women who took the decision after BBBP was launched in Jhunjhunu three years ago,” district collector Dinesh Kumar Yadav told TOI after holding a meeting with NGOs and other BBBP stakeholders, organised in preparation of PM’s visit.
Officials said that these women would speak about how the situation has changed in their district. The child sex ratio (0-6 years) was 837 as per the 2011 census report, the worst in the state. But now it has improved drastically.
Officials said that these women have become empowered and taken decisions on how many children to have. They are also happy with their girl child and do not seek to have a male child. Such women have been identified in the district and are likely to meet the PM.
The BBBP was launched with the objective of preventing gender-based sex selection and elimination, ensuring survival and protection of the girl child and providing education. The goals under BBBP are achieved through changing the mindset through advocacy and awareness, implementing the PCPNDT Act.
Jhunjhunu collector Dinesh Kumar Yadav will also be presented the national award for Jhunjhunu’s performance in ‘enabling girl child education’. Sikar district collector Naresh Kumar Thakral will receive the award for performance in the category of ‘effective community engagement’. Out of the 10 national awards to be distributed on March 8, the state will receive two.
