Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said no riots took place in Uttar Pradesh in the last eleven months - that is, in the time that has elapsed since the BJP came to power last year.

Adityanath's remarks came at a public meeting in Allahabad, just months after a young man, Chandan Gupta, was killed in communal clashes that broke out on Republic Day in Kasganj, a town located in western UP.

What's more, the Union Home Ministry has said UP was the state that witnessed the highest number of communal incidents in 2017.

At today's meeting, Yogi Adityanath criticised the previous Samajwadi Pary administration headed by Akhilesh Yadav. He said the SP government believed in discrimination, while the BJP did not.

He also claimed that the SP government had been involved in many "misdeeds", and that it had taken his own administration 9 to 10 months to straighten up affairs

Kasganj was in the news on the republic day this year as violence erupted after Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad held a Tiranga bike rally through a muslim locality. Members of ABVP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) were accused of orchestrating the violence in Kasganj. Both the organisations are afiliated to the Sangh Parivar.
