Meghalaya Election Results 2018 Live Updates: Congress increases lead, others behind

Congress is inching ahead with NPP giving a strong fight. Exit polls here had predicted a tight fight and early trends indicate it's playing out that way. BJP and allies going strong in Meghalaya- 11 against Cong's 7. Conrad Sangma's NPP is ahead in 7, the Congress in 7 and the BJP only in 4.
Meghalaya CM and Congress leader Mukul Sangma is leading from his Ampati seat. Sangma is contesting from two seats --- Ampati and Songsak.
It's the battle of the two Sangmas in Meghalaya. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is pitted against his surnamesake Conrad sangma of the National People's Party in a contest which will determine whether the Congress will be dislodged from one of its few remaining perches in the country.
The contest involves the ruling Congress, BJP, National People's Party (NPP) and the newly floated People's Democratic Front. Conrad Sangma's even though a part of the NDA's North East Democratic Alliance and a partner of the BJP in some other states, is not in a saffron alliance in this Christian-majority state. A post-poll pact is however not ruled out.
The CVoter exit poll has predicted the ruling Congress suffering some setback with its tally coming down to 13-19 from 29 while the BJP is set to win 4-8 seats and around 16.5 per cent of vote share. It said the local National People's Party (NPP) may get 17-23 seats.
In 2013, the BJP had badly lost all 13 seats it contested with a vote share of 6.2 per cent. The NPP had won only two seats out of 32 it contested. This time the BJP aggressively wooed the dominant Christian community with union minister KJ Alphons leading the charge.
With exit polls predicting an unclear outcome regional parties like United Democratic Party (UDP), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Garo National Council (GNC) may be key in forming the government.
Polling in Williamnagar constituency of the state was countermanded following the death of Nationalist Congress Party candidate in an IED blast.
