Five days after the State government issued an order for a probe, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Saturday registered a case against former Director-General of Prisons H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao under Prevention of Corruption Act to inquire into the charge that facilities were provided to jailed AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala Natarajan violating prison rules for monetary favours.
The ACB is now gathering documents to conduct a detailed probe and initiate action against Mr. Rao under Section 13(1) and 13(2) of PC Act. The government order was following a report by IAS officer Vinay Kumar (retd.), who was commissioned to probe the alleged irregularities. Mr. Kumar had recently submitted his report to the government about the irregularities and recommended corrective measures.
The alleged irregularities came to light when Deputy Inspector General of Prisons D. Roopa filed a report to the DGP and also a copy to the Home Department stating that prison staff was providing VIP treatment to Ms. Sasikala in violation of the prison manual. Ms. Roopa had also alleged that many other inmates in the central prisons were provided similar facilities for monetary gain.
Following this, Mr. Rao was transferred without posting till his retirement and Ms. Roopa was transferred as commissioner for traffic and road safety. Later, a committee under Mr. Kumar was formed to investigate the matter.
