It's been a Big Week In Art

It’s a quote usually attributed to John Lennon but it was American writer and cartoonist Allen Saunders who first wrote: ‘’Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.’’

It could have been written to describe the career of pioneering Australian painter Grace Crowley (1890-1979). In 1926, Crowley moved to France to study painting at the Academie Andre Lhote, where her work flourished to a standard that justified an invitation to exhibit at noted Parisian gallery Bernheim-Jeune in 1929.

Under pressure from her family to return to Australia and help with family matters, Crowley declined the invitation, effectively ending a possible international art career. Thankfully for footy fans, the Western Bulldogs’ Brooke Lochland’s attempt at an international ice-skating career was thwarted at the trials for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

She’s since kicked on impressively, setting an AFLW goalkicking record with a seven-goal haul against the Blues last weekend.
