BJP has made significant gains in the assembly election results in Tripura and Nagaland, however in Meghalaya, it managed to win just two seats. The counting of votes in the three northeastern states had begun at 8 am on Saturday amid tight security. In the Left Front bastion of Tripura, the BJP and its ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) won a total of 43 seats against’s CPM 16. In Nagaland, the saffron party and its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) are leading in 21 seats, while the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) is ahead in 16 seats. In Meghalaya, the ruling Congress has won 21 seats, while the National People’s Party (NPP) came close second with 19 seats. 10.50 pm IST BJP certain to be part of govt in NagalandAlthough the BJP-NDPP alliance failed to secure a majority in Nagaland with the state throwing up a hung assembly, the party’s participation in the future government looks certain. The ruling NPF, which emerged as the single largest party, extended invitation to the BJP to join the new dispensation, though the BJP-NDPP combine may be able to form a government with help from smaller parties like NPP, JD(U) and an independent.
9.50 pm IST Final tally in Tripura gives BJP majority, Meghalaya assembly hungThe BJP on Saturday won 35 seats in Tripura in a historic moment for the party, according to the Election Commission. The CPM, which ruled the state for 25 years had to be content with just 16 seats. BJP’s alliance partner Indigenous People’s Front Of Tripura (IPFT) secured 8 seats. 9.31 am IST Meghalaya trends: Congress leading in 3, UDP in 2 seatsThe Congress was leading in three seats, while the United Democratic Party (UDP) was leading in two seats as per early trends available for the Meghlaya assembly elections. 8.23 am IST BJP ally NDPP’s Neiphiu Rio elected unopposed in NagalandThough the strength of each assembly is 60, voting was held for 59 constituencies in all the three states, for different reasons. While a CPI(M) candidate died in Tripura, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate was killed in Meghalaya, and this resulted in countermanding of the polls in one seat in each of the two states. In Nagaland, former chief minister Neiphiu Rio, who is now the chief ministerial candidate of the NDPP-BJP alliance, won from one seat unopposed. Tripura went to the polls on 18 February and elections were held in Nagaland and Meghalaya on 27 February. (PTI)
7.34 am IST Counting to begin at 8am in TripuraAdditional Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura Tapas Ray said that adequate security measures have been put in place at the counting centres. “Adequate security measures have been made for the counting centres. Counting halls were also ready. General observers and police observers were appointed for all the counting halls,” ANI quoted Ray as saying.

While the Congress has been ruling Meghalaya for 10 years, the Naga People’s Front (NFP) has been in power in Nagaland since 2003, except for a three-month period of President’s rule in 2008.
