From 'no one' to 'won', BJP has come a long way: PM Modi after Tripura win
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed BJP’s victory in Tripura and said it has come amidst violence perpetrated by CPI (M) against his party workers and by overcoming fear and false propaganda spread by the Maoists and the Leftists.

Though he focused his speech mainly on the Left, Modi also took jibes at Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi, saying in some parties people rise to the top but are reduced in stature. He said soon Congress would remain in power only in Pudducherry and discounted Punjab as one where the Chief Minister does not consider himself as owing allegiance to the top leadership of the party.

Modi alleged that the Left parties had indulged in creating fear and spreading misinformation about the BJP. He said the results show that the poorest of the poor voters and the uneducated in these north eastern states had borne the brunt of Maoist and Leftist violence as much as BJP workers and have responded to it through their vote.

“In a democracy victory and defeat are very natural. This is the beauty of democracy. But for a political party to digest victory is as significant as for a party to be able to accept defeat. After all this is sportsman spirit,” Modi said, adding that some parties have not been able to come to terms with their defeat since 2014.

Referring to the Left statement post-defeat in Tripura where CPI(M) has accused BJP of “massive deployment of money” among other resources, the Prime Minister said he is “surprised at Left arrogance” in the face of defeat.

“In the midst of such misinformation, the truth about BJP has reached the far corners of the north-east to the people there. For people living in far reaches of the region, it is very difficult to shed the old and accept the new… But they must have gone through such pain, such atrocities that their anger was manifested in the votes,” he said.

Modi termed BJP’s win in the North East as a journey from “no one to won” and said this is not “vendetta but mandata (mandate)”.

“You know when the sun sets it is red and when it rises again it has a saffron hue. Yesterday the country was painted in various colours on Holi but today all colours have turned saffron,” Modi said. He drew an analogy from Vastu Shastra and said once the North-East of a structure is taken care of, the rest of it is set right.

The Prime Minister assured the North East that his government will “fulfil with interest” the promises of development made during the elections.

Giving credit to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government for initiating the process of development of the North East in a more serious manner, Modi said the DONER ministry was created during that regime and he has improved upon it.

He underlined that his government has created a quota in government jobs in the capital for the youth of North East. “We took Delhi to the doorstep of the North East,” Modi said, adding that the DONER ministry officials visit various parts of the North East to deal with issues.

Every 15 days, one minister would visit a state of the north east since 2014.

“We sent more ministers to the north east in these four years than have visited the region since Independence,” he said.

He gave credit to BJP Chief Amit Shah for ensuring “victory after victory” in Assembly elections.

Modi stopped his speech for a couple of minutes for Azaan by a nearby mosque. He dedicated the BJP victory to party workers martyred in Left violence and asked the gathering at the BJP headquarters to observe two minutes of silence.
