AGARTALA: To keep Congress out of power in Meghalaya, BJP has floated a platform of non-Congress parties. Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said he has talked to National People's Party (NPP) and United Democratic Party (UDP) and both parties must come together to form a government in Meghalaya.

BJP has won two seats in Meghalaya. Congress has emerged as single largest party with21 seats.

Sarma said both NPP and UDP are members of NEDA.

“The verdict is against Congress and incumbent chief minister. Congress' number of seats have drastically reduced,” said Sarma.

He said, “In Manipur and Goa, we have formed government however in Meghalaya we will support non-Congress formation.”

He said Hill State People’s Democratic Party has pre-poll alliance with UDP. “People's Democratic Front was born as a reaction to the leadership of chief minister, Mukul Sangma.”

On the question of Congress meeting the governor first, Sarma said, “We have no problem in Congress meeting the governor first. However, they must show the majority number 31 while must refraining from horse trading.”

With a section of Congress leaders questioning Sarma's hurried visit to Shillong, he said, “Several big leaders of Indian politics have come here, these leaders are the big names. I am too small for them. However, I am the son of the soil.”

Congress leadership has sent senior Congress leaders Kamal Nath, Mukul Wasnik and Ahmed Patel to Shillong to avert Manipur and Gao like situation.
