The sanitation workers of the city Corporation did a commendable job on Friday evening in cleaning up most of the public spaces after the Attukal Pongala.
But, many of the institutions situated on the main road, which opened their doors to the devotees, now have mounds of waste, including partially-burnt wood, plantain leaves, plastic bags, newspapers, ash, and other waste on their premises, waiting to be cleaned.
This is the case inside the Government Sanskrit College and a few other institutions on the main road. According to Corporation officials, only the cleaning up of public spaces comes under its mandate.
‘No mandate’
“Our sanitation workers usually clean up only the main roads and the bylanes, and property owned by the Corporation. We have no mandate to go inside institutions, public or private, and clean up. If request for help in cleaning comes from the authorities, we will certainly provide support. No such request has come till now,” an official said.
On Saturday, a smaller team of sanitation workers carried out cleaning activities in some of the areas that were not covered on Friday night.
The main thoroughfare from Palayam to East Fort was washed down on Friday night. But on the other roads, ash remained to be cleaned. Some of it were removed manually by the sanitation workers on Saturday.
Bricks damaged
A part of the bricks collected for the art installation project also remained unused, as a large number of them were damaged. These were also seen piled up along the road at many places.
