Gandhi Nagar area in the city, which is flocked by movie buffs every day, on Friday wore a deserted look with cinemas remaining closed in protest against the alleged monopoly of the Digital Service Providers (DSPs).
Indefinite strike
A single street here has 14 screens of theatres and multiplexes. Likewise, over 100 other single-screens and multiplex screens across the city and district brought down their curtains. The management stopped screening movies in solidarity with the South Indian producers, distributors and exhibitors union and the JAC that had given a call for an indefinite strike
While there were no Telugu movies scheduled for release, new Hindi and English films were also not screened anywhere. People who visited the cinemas unaware of the strike, had to return after going through the notices put up by the owners. “We have old and recent movies, available but even they will not be screened,” said K. Siva, a representative of a cinema in the city.
