- The counting of votes for Meghalaya election results has begun in Shillong on Saturday amid tight security. The Bharatiya Janata Party is looking to oust the 10-year-old Congress government in the state, currently led by Mukul Sangma, who is contesting from two seats—Ampathi and Songsak. The Meghalaya elections took place on 27 February. The Congress fielded 59 candidates, while the BJP put up nominees in 47 constituencies. Here are the latest updates and developments from Meghalaya election results:
- 2.23 pm IST NPP to form govt in Meghalaya with help of others, says Conrad SangmaThe National People’s Party (NPP) exuded confidence that the party would form the next government in Meghalaya saying the people of the Northeastern state were looking for a change. As the results for the 27 February elections indicated a hung house for the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, NPP president Conrad Sangma said his party would be able to form the next government with the help of other like-minded parties. “We are hopeful that we will be able to form the government. People are fed up with the corrupt Congress government and looking for a change,” he told PTI. Sangma, son of veteran leader late P A Sangma, said results were still coming but the NPP will be in a position to form the government with the help of other parties. Congress has won 11 seats and was ahead in 9 seats, while NPP has bagged 4 seats and was leading in 15 seats, according to latest data from the Election Commission. UDP and HSPDP won 2 seats each, while BJP was leading in 2 constituencies.

Sangma, who is the chief minister since 2010, retained Ampati seat defeating his nearest BJP rival Bakul Ch Hajong by over 6,000 votes. He also won from Songsak constituency defeating his nearest National People’s Party rival Nihim Shira by over 1,300 votes. The BJP was in the third position. The chief minister’s wife Dikkanchi Shira also won from Mahendraganj seat defeating her nearest BJP rival Premananda Koch by over 6,000 votes, the sources said. (PTI)

- 12 pm IST Top Congress leaders leave for Meghalaya to explore govt formation possibilitiesWith election trends projecting that the Congress could emerge as the single-largest party in Meghalaya, the party rushed two senior leaders to the northeastern state to explore possibilities of forming a government. According to sources, senior Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and Kamal Nath left for Shillong this morning to work out possible tie-ups with independents in Meghalaya to form a government there. Congress, which currently rules Meghalaya, was leading in 21 seats, emerging as the single largest party in the state, according to latest data from the Election Commission. (PTI)

In Mairang, Metbah Lyngdoh OF UDP won with 10,710 votes against Councellor Singh Wahlang of PDF with 7,796 votes. In mawthadraishan, UDP’s Brolding Nongsiej received 13,520 votes followed by Biolinda Nonglait of Hill State People’s Democratic Party with 11,691 votes. Also, Samlin Malngiang, candidate of Hill State People’s Democratic Party for Sohiong constituency, won by 622 votes. UDP heads a regional alliance in the state which includes the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Garo National Council (GNC).

Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma, who has contested from two constituencies, was leading in Ampati with 5583 votes and in Songsak with 8931 votes. Dikkanchi Shira, wife of Mukul Sangma and Congress candidate from Mahendraganj constituency, was leading with 6863 votes.

Voting for largely peaceful, said chief electoral officer F.R. Kharkongor. The election office is awaiting data to be received from remote places in the Garo Hills and East Jaintia Hills districts, he said. “Over 13.5 lakh of the 18.09 lakh voters in Meghalaya have cast their votes. This means around 74.62% polling was recorded,” he said. The final figure could go up after the data of the far flung areas are added.
