The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) alliance is all set to end the 25-year uninterrupted rule of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM)-led Left Front in Tripura throwing a big surprise on Saturday. At least two exit polls had predicted a BJP win, while another suggested close contest between the BJP and the Left alliances, with the latter having an advantage. The counting of votes began at 8am in Agartala, said the Election Commission officials. Polling for 59 seats in Tripura’s 60-member House were held on 18 February. 1.52 pm IST BJP secured over 42% votesThe BJP strong showing came as a surprise for many as the party did not even have a councillor in Tripura. It had secured less than 2% votes in the 2013 Assembly election in the state. According to an EC source, the BJP contested in 51 seats in Tripura and secured over 42% votes. Its ally IPFT, which fielded candidates in 9 seats, got nearly 8% votes. On the other hand, the CPI(M)-led Left Front, which had captured 50 of the 60 seats in the 2013 Assembly poll, managed to secure nearly 44% this time, the EC source said. (PTI)

The BJP was leading in 32 seats with its ally IPFT ahead in 8 seats. The majority mark in the assembly is 31. BJP state president Biplab Kumar Deb was leading from Banamlipur seat. The ruling CPI(M), which has been in power for the last 25 years, was ahead in 19 seats. The Left Front had tasted defeat in 1988 Assembly polls at the hands of the Congress-Tripura Upajati Juba Samity combine. (PTI)

We will form the government. People were fed up with the Manik Sarkar government which has been ruling the state for more than two decades and wanted to get rid of the CPI-M rule. Tribal votes in Tripura is around 35 per cent and they voted for the BJP lock, stock and barrel,” he told reporters in Agartala as initial trends indicated that the BJP is leading in 25 seats out the 59 seats where elections were held.
