Thane: A police party which went to arrest suspects was
attacked by a pack of
Irani clan, injuring an officer on Friday in
Mumbra.
A total of four persons including a woman were arrested by the Mumbra police for attacking the policemen with blows, fists and punches. Mangesh Borse, the assistant inspector was injured after one accused using a steel fighter punch attacked him injuring his hand, while some of the constables were beaten up by the Irani clan, informed the police. The police said that while investigating a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 case, they came across a name of accused Hussain Jafri 37 and Siraj Irani 32, both residents of Kausa in Mumbra.
Accordingly a police party from the Mumbra police station went to arrest the duo at around 12.20 pm near Zendewala baba Dargah in the Kausa area, said DS Swamy, the deputy commissioner of police zone-1. As the police was escorting Jafri, a mob of woman children as well as other came to rescue and resisted the police from taking away Jafri. His family members gheroed the police party and attacked the police party with bricks and manhandled them.
The other accused Irani, in the meantime came rushing towards Borse and with a hard fighter punch he was about to hit the head of Borse but the officer in bid to evade the punch , hit his hand, said a police officer.
The officer added that the family members created ruckus and even warned the police officer of dire consequences and even threatned to kill them. Later, additioanal staff was summoned and the accused were arrested. The police found a country made pistol from the possession Jafri while the police recovered the fighter punch from the possession of Irani.
The police said that one juvenile was detained and sent to the remand home for attacking the police while three including a woman named Surraiya Jafri 40 was arrested.
A case has been registered at Mumbra police station.
