Pedestrian subways at Thousand Lights, Guindy and Anna Salai (near the old Safire Theatre) will get Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras soon.
Contracts for the work have been awarded and the groundbreaking ceremony was held recently.
Renovation of the pedestrian facilities across the Grand Southern Trunk Road would also be taken up at a cost of ₹1.2 crore each, said an official.
Built in the 1970s
The three subways were built in the 1970s, and maintenance work, including replacement of leaky roofs, lighting and other repairs, had been taken up over the years.
“As part of the renovation, both the exteriors and interiors would be repaired. Outside, toughened glass would be used and tiles in the interiors would be replaced,” the official said, adding that the works would be completed in six months.
The electrical lines would be completely changed and energy-saving LED lights fitted. “The motors to pump out water will have automatic controls,” another official said.
V. Santha, who works at a company near Thousand Lights, said she was glad CCTVs cameras would be installed.
“It would be nice if such facilities are provided at all subways and foot overbridges,” she said.
Cameras would be fitted in all the 14 pedestrian subways being maintained by the department in a phased manner.
