Tourism officials asked to initiate action against erring shack operators

PANAJI: Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar, on Saturday, has directed the tourism department officials to initiate action against the ‘erring’ shack operators along the Baga-Sinquerim coastal stretch.

The direction came following a report published in ‘The Navhind Times’ on Friday following complaints about illegal activities at the shacks, particularly, relating to their operations beyond the permitted time as also playing of music beyond the permissible limits.

«I will not tolerate this defiance by the shack operators as well as the dereliction of duty of the department officials in not clamping down on errant shack operators. I have directed the tourism officials to act immediately against the violators,” said Ajgaonkar in a statement issued here adding that he will “hold department officials accountable if they fail to act fast.”

The Tourism Minister has further said that he would look into the complaints raised by the locals and will  act against the offenders and also against department staff for failing to nip the issues in the bud.

He has said that the nuisance created by some shack operators is not in the true spirit of healthy tourism practices and added that the government is serious about action against anyone encouraging and deflecting from acting against such violations as well.

Ajgaonkar has assured the locals from the Baga-Sinquerim stretch of tough action against the violators.

He has further said that strict monitoring of tourism activities would take place not only in the northern coastal areas but along the entire coastal stretch of the state.

The Tourism Minister has directed the department officials to initiate action against the violators failing which he would “hold the department accountable and responsible for the same.”

He has also urged the police to keep a tight vigil along the beach belt and swoop down heavily on illegal activities and violations that bring disrepute to Goa.
