Quiz based on life and contribution of Gandhi, Ambedkar

Prerana K. and Goutami N. of J.K. English Medium School, Hubballi, won the first ever school quiz organised by Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) in association with The Hindu here on Friday.

The quiz, held on the life and contribution of Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar, at Samskrutika Bhavan here, saw Prerana and Goutami led from the first round and increased the lead in the subsequent rounds.

Shobhana H. and Shreya P. of Chinmaya Vidyalaya (CBSE), Hubballi, who tried to catch up, got lucky with the buzzer in the second and third rounds, but had to be satisfied with the second position.

Khushi Hulmani and Siddharth A. Angadi, of Parivartan Gurukul Heritage, Hubballi, came third.

Municipal Commissioner Major Siddalingayya Hiremath gave away the trophies and cash prizes to the winners. Dalit leaders Pitambarappa Bilara, Premanath Chikkatumbal, Gurunath Ullikashi and Yashoda Chalavadi gave away trophies and certificates to the remaining finalists.

Deepthi N.J. and Rujula R. Khasnis of Chinmaya Vidyalaya (State Syllabus), Hubballi, and Samiya Tamboti and Ishwarya Mokhashi of SJRC High School, Noolvi, finished in the fourth and fifth positions. Nikitha K. and Komal M. of Lions English Medium School, Hubballi, finished sixth.

Around 300 students from different schools of the twin cities and surrounding villages took part in the quiz conducted by quizmaster Jyotishwar from Bengaluru. After the preliminary round of 25 questions, six teams that qualified were called on for the finals which consisted of four rounds.

Earlier, inaugurating the event, Mayor D.K. Chavan emphasised upon the need to know about the life and contributions of great leaders. Majorr Hiremath said that it was necessary for students to know about the culture and history of their country, and about the leaders who ensured their independence, freedom of expression and other rights.

Major Hiremath said the lives of both Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar provided several lessons. He asked students to take active roles in activities of nation building once they entered careers of their choice. Deputy Mayor Laxmibai Bijawad and Dalit leader Pitambarappa Bilar also spoke. HDMC Public Relations Officer S.C. Bevoor was present.
