Harmanpreet joins Punjab police

Chandigarh: Indian women's Twenty20 cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur  joined the Punjab police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), here on Thursday. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora pinned the stars on her uniform. "Proud to join DGP Suresh Arora in pinning the stars on the uniform of this young cricketer @ImHarmanpreet as she takes over as DSP in @PunjabPolice. This lady has done us proud and I'm confident she'll continue to do so. My best wishes are with her," Amarinder tweeted. Harmanpreet, who was serving in the Indian Railways, was relieved from her duties after she put in a request to join Punjab police.

Vinesh enters final of Asian Wrestling C’ship

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan): Vinesh Phogat assured herself and India of at least a silver medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship as she entered the final of the 50kg category with a win over Japan's Yuki Irie. The 2014 CWG champion earned the win by taking a bigger point as she locked the score 4-4 with her move. The Asian Games bronze medal winner will now fight out with China's Chun Lei for the gold medal. Another Indian woman wrestler, who is in medal contention is Sangeeta, who will fight for a bronze with Korea's Jieun UM in the 59kg category. Sangeeta had lost her quarter-final 5-15 to Uzbekistan's Nabira Esenbaeva.

Aizawl confident to sign off with win

aizawl: Defending champions Aizawl FC will host in-form Gokulam FC in their final match of the ongoing Hero I-League here on Friday. Aizawl have found it hard to replicate last season's title-winning form and are currently stranded sixth in the table with 21 points from 17 games. After a disappointing start to the I-League, Gokulam have bounced back in style, winning their last three matches against the likes of Minerva Punjab FC, Kingfisher East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. If Bino George can conjure up a win against Aizawl FC, they will leapfrog the current champions in the table, sealing an automatic berth to the Super Cup.

Thangaraja shoots into lead at Chennai Open golf

chennai: Sri Lanka's N Thangaraja on Thursday came up with an impressive performance, a nine-under 61, to shoot into the lead at end of round one of the Chennai Open golf championship 2018 here. Delhi's Shamim Khan, the 2017 PGTI Order of Merit champion, returned a card of six-under-64, to be second. Thangaraja, runner-up at the PGTI event in Hyderabad last week, dominated the opening round with a breathtaking nine-under-61 that featured an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey. It was the joint best round of the Sri Lankan golfer's career that gave him a handy three-shot lead. Thangaraja, apparently eager to make up for missing the cut at the previous edition of the Chennai Open in 2016, looked in good form from the start.

Sawhney, Sardana grab final qualification spots

gurugram: Golfers Aman Sawhney Handicap Category A (0-17) and Manav Sardana — Handicap Category B (18-24) qualified for the National Finals of Mercedes Trophy 2018 on day 3 of the Gurugram leg qualifier here. Aman and Manav clinched the final two qualification spots available from the leg by carding a nett Score of 70.6 and 72 respectively. The Mercedes Trophy 2018 has so far seen 37 qualifiers including today who will be competing in the National Finals to be played at the Oxford Golf Resort in Pune from 4 to 6 April.
