A Bengaluru court rejected the bail petition of Mohammed Nalapad Harris, son of Shantinagar MLA and Congress member N A Haris, because the incident was a serious attack, the victim is still unable to give a statement to the police and that there could be tampering of evidence in the case.
The 63rd City Civil and Sessions Court, on Friday, made observations that the attack on Vidwath L was brutal in nature, and going by his medical condition, he is not yet in a position to give a statement to the police.
Since a major portion of the investigation is still pending, there could be higher chances of tampering with evidence and influencing of witnesses if the accused was granted bail, said the court, rejecting the bail petition.
Mohammed Nalapad, the eldest of four children of lawmaker N A Haris, along with six other accomplices is accused violently attacking Vidwath at the high-end UB City mall in central Bengaluru on 17 February. The resultant attack left Vidwath with facial bruises and fractured ribs. He was since produced before a court and sent to jail for 14-days as the investigation proceeded. Vidwath was admitted to Mallya Hospital to tend to his injuries.

Nalapad, who has a history of violent behaviour, was a member of the Congress party until his recent suspension due to the incident. He was an aspiring youth political leader and social worker, according to recent reports and social media posts.
The incident has become a huge embarassment for sitting Congress MLA N A Haris and for the Congress Party as well, in the lead up to the Karnataka Assembly elections coming up this Summer.
Ironically, Nalapad has previously spoken at colleges and a TEDx event in Bengaluru, on topics such staying away from drug abuse and being a good person.
Citizens of Bengaluru expressed outrage over the incident and subsequent events. People's opinion on social media has been largely negative, although some constituents have come out in support of the tarnished youth leader.
Rahul Gandhi, do you think people of Karnataka will vote for #Congress after coming to know that Mohammad Nalapad, son of Congress MLA NA Harris, is a rowdy with an attempt to murder case & many instances of assault on the people of his own constituency? Will you take action?
