Cape Town - South African National Parks (SANParks) officials at Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) deployed three helicopters on Friday morning to battle the blaze at Cape Point, which has been raging since Thursday afternoon.

Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS), Working on Fire and NCC Wildfires are busy fighting the flames. "While good progress was made by the team last night active areas remain," writes VWS in a tweet.

Ninety firefighters battled strong south-easterly winds to get the fire under control, with only one flank still burning strong.

SANParks closed off Link Road to Cape Point on Thursday and warned hikers to "please refrain from any hiking activity until further notice" in a Facebook post.

"TMNP is busy evacuating Olifantsbos", said SANParks, adding that there's "no threat to people and property at this stage" according to the latest update this morning.

Authorities have warned the public to "please stay clear of the area" and not obstruct fire trucks.

According to SA Weather Service, extremely high fire danger conditions are expected to continue in places over the Cape Metropole and south-western parts of Cape Winelands on Friday, 2 March.

High fire danger conditions are also expected on Friday over parts of the northern and eastern interior of Northern Cape.
