As the afternoon storm raged on, towns around Fall River reported massive power outages, according to National Grid’s listing at 5 p.m.
Nearly half of Somerset was without power – 3,179 out of 7,768 customers — with results similar in Swansea (2,693 of 7,419) and slightly less in Westport, where National Grid services (1234 of 3,243 customers).
Nearly 10 percent of Fall River, 4,160 customers, were listed with power outages, and in all instances National Grid reported they were assessing conditions while working to restore power. Power across the city was expected to be mostly back online by 7:45 p.m.
In Tiverton, 1,642 of 8,197 customers were listed as without power.
Farther north and west, conditions were more drastic, with nearly all of Dighton (2,562 of 2,734) and Rehoboth (4,015 of 5,144) without power.
In Bristol County, 49,729 customers out of 114,938 were reported as being without power as of 5:45 p.m.
The number of homes without power was far greater than it was just three hours earlier. when 1,596 Fall River customers lost power, along with just 357 in Swansea and less than 5 percent of Somerset.
As the area has been belted with 2 inches of rain Friday, with winds gusting to 50 to 60 miles an hour. Shortly before 5:30 p.m., a Somerset family reported a tree had fallen on their County Street home in the 4300 block, and they were unable to enter their house that was blocking the road, according to police scanner reports.
Crews re-opened County Street within about 10 minutes, they said.
The biggest progress in the area was the reopening of the Braga Bridge shortly after 3:30 p.m., about 90 minutes after a tractor-trailer going westbound overturned.
