WICKET! Nathan Lyon cleans up Quinton de Kock for 20. South Africa lose six, trailing by 201 runs
AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock have provided the resistance that was required. But the two need to stay at the crease for a longer time. De Kock just needs to guard his wicket more than doing anything else and De Villiers would score runs from the other side. This is the only recognised batting pair for South Africa now.
Another one bites the dust and it is De Bruyn who has gone for 6. He tried to drive a length delivery from Starc but only managed to edge it. Paine takes a good catch. SA are 108/5
South Africa have been struggling in this match. The batsmen haven't applied themselves properly. The top five batsmen needed to chip with 60-70 each but they have certainly lost the plot and the onus is now on AB de Villiers.
WICKET! Starc gets the big wicket of Faf du Plessis. He edges the ball that goes straight to Tim Paine behind the stumps. SA are 92/4
SIX! Faf du Plessis comes down the track and smashes that one from Lyon for a maximum. That was a perfect hit. South Africa are 88/3
WICKET! Markram is gone. Cummins bowls a short one and Markram gives a catch to short-leg fielder. With that, the second session ends. SA are struggling at 55/3
AB De Villiers and Aiden Markram are holding fort for the hosts. soaking in some of the pressure that was built up by the twin strikes from Nathan Lyon.
Two in five! Hashim Amla caught at short leg and Lyon has made a proper dent here. Out comes AB De Villiers
Blinder from Lyon! Lyon gets it turn from around the wicket and Elgar takes it back to the bowler, Lyon dives to his right to take the catch.
Aiden Markram has done most of the scoring so far. He hit two fours off Mitchell Starc's over to keep up the pace of the Australian innings. Starc and Hazlewood are alternating for the Australians.
Five wicket haul for Keshav Maharaj. Nathan Lyon skies this one to covers and is the last man to fall. Australia have dragged themselves to a very competitive 351 here. South Africa have a job in their hands now
And he plays a rash shot! A good length and Marsh heaves it through the line. But the ball never gains any flight and the towering Morne Morkel only has to stretch his hands a little to pluck that red cherry. He will bedisappointedd by that but it has been a fine innings otherwise.
It looks like South Africa is back to square one and this time, Australia is clearly in front. Nathan Lyon has held on while Marsh has freed his arms up a bit.
Maharaj again and this time he has got the danger man. But Starc has done what was expected of him and Australia have reached the 300 mark. Umpires also call for Lunch and that is the end of a rivetting first session. Three wickets have come off it and South Africa are slowly but surely working their way down the lower order. Australia have lasted the first session and that is fair play to them. This is an evenly poised game of cricket at the moment.
Mitchell Starc has come with the sole target to accumulate as many runs as possible. He has made 25 off 15 balls while Marsh has reached his third Test 50. Starc's innings has thus far been punctuated by four fours, all in the same over and one six.
Maharaj strikes in his first over with the new ball. Cummins has stood strong for such a long time now but Maharaj breaks his defence. The ball spins past the bat that is kept close to the pads and takes the middle stump.
Pat Cummins has come in to join Mitchell Marsh in the middle. It is the first time since 2011 that Cummins is playing a Test match in South Africa. Back then, he was a 19-year-old debutante and went on to win the man of the match award for his six-wicket haul in the South African second innings
Rabada makes the new ball work! This one lifts off the deck and Paine jabs at it, ends up nicking it to the wicket keeper. The partnership is broken and South Africa rejoice.
A single does the job. Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj have started the proceedings for the South Africans. Thus far, no flashy shots.
Mitchell Marsh and Tim Paine start Day 2 on a solid 48-run stand and breaking that would be the priority for the Proteas. The overnight rain can spice things up a little with the new ball being available after the fourth over the day. Kagiso Rabada starts the South African attack.
