Even though this latest Audi A6 doesn’t represent as big of a departure from its predecessor as the latter did compared to the third-generation C6 car, look anywhere below the shoulder line and you’ll see some changes.
The new car is more edgy, both literally and figuratively. Audi attempted to make the design more futuristic, and with the Prologue concept serving as inspiration, we now have yet another modern (albeit familiar looking) German saloon to consider when discussing segment supremacy.
Of course, the 2019 Audi A6 is by no means just an aesthetic redesign. The car features countless technical improvements that we’re not going to get into right now, simply because this is strictly a visual comparison and looking into other factors such as active safety or connectivity, just wouldn’t be fair.
The A6 (C7), the one still being sold today, was updated back in 2014, when Audi fiddled with the headlights and taillights a tiny bit, as well as with the singleframe grille, air inlets, bumpers and tailpipes. The bodywork changes were extremely subtle, and your best bet was always to look at the design of the LED DRLs in order to accurately determine whether it was a pre or post-facelift model.
Visually, the new car takes everything that made the old A6 what it was and stretches it out a bit, while adding all those previously-mentioned edges along the bodywork. The grille is wider, the air intakes more pronounced (though overall smaller), and the headlights sharper.
Around at the back, there’s a set of larger taillights with more complex graphics, and a fender to fender chrome strip, similar to the A8 flagship. Another significant difference between the two cars when viewed from the rear concerns the exhaust tips, which on the newer model, are totally fake.
As for the interior, this might be where the biggest departure took place on the styling department. The all-new A6 takes after the A8 and A7 Sportback, so it’s rocking that dual display look, which also allowed Audi engineers to clear out the center console. The old car had all sorts of buttons and dials flanking the gear lever, whereas now, the same area looks a lot more civilized, if you like that sort of thing.
Passengers will also be happy to know there’s more room inside the all-new A6, thanks to a wheelbase that now measures 2,924 mm (9.5 ft) – this growth affects legroom, headroom and shoulder room.
