Air coolers to be installed in enclosures

As precautionary measures to help animals survive the oppressive heat between March and June, the Nehru Zoological Park has started making special arrangements.

Over 50 air coolers would be installed in the enclosures of chimpanzees, monkeys, tigers, lions, jaguars and panthers, while air conditioners along with exhaust fans have been put in place in the nocturnal animal house.

Sprinklers and rain guns have been installed in all the animal enclosures, and foggers sprinkling mist-like water would soon be installed in the reptile house, the enclosures of Macaw, pheasant area and aviary.

Shady shelters

Rooftops of all the animal and bird enclosures would be spread with Thunga grass, while shady shelters have been provided for all the herbivores. Windows and openings to the enclosures would be covered using Khashkhash partitions and gunny covers so as to avoid animals’ direct exposure to sunlight.

The grass and partitions would be sprinkled with water at least four to five times a day.

Green shade nets would be placed over the roof of the birds’ enclosures and the windows and doors of the night houses.

Seasonal fruit varieties such as watermelon, muskmelon and citrus fruits are being given to all apes, birds and bears, along with ample protected drinking water.

Besides, the fauna is also being supplied with glucose water, electral powder, vitamin supplements, and thermocare liquid dissolved in water to avoid stress, a press statement issued by the zoo authorities on Thursday said.
