The town is bedecked to host the State conference of the Communist Party of India (CPI) beginning on Thursday.
Malappuram will script history by hosting for the first time the CPI State conference being conducted ahead of the 23rd party congress to be held in Kollam in April last week.
Two dozen-odd party flag marches taken out from constituencies such as Ponnani, Tavanur, Tirur, Tanur, Tirurangadi, Vallikkunnu, Kondotty, Malappuram, Manjeri, Wandoor, Nilambur, Eranad, Perinthalmanna, and Mankada converged here on Wednesday evening. Veteran party leader E.P. Mohammedali received the flag.
CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy will inaugurate the State conference at Rose Lounge here on Thursday morning. Veteran leader C.A. Kurien will hoist the party flag. The inaugural session will be followed by the presentation of a report by the State secretary and the delegates will begin discussion on it. Novelist C. Radhakrishnan will inaugurate a cultural session. Writers K.P. Ramanunni, M.N. Karasseri, and Kureepuzha Sreekumar will be among the speakers. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate a seminar on the relevance and potentials of the Left front at Municipal Town Hall on Friday afternoon. Janata Dal leader M.P. Veerendrakumar, Transport Minister A.K. Saseendran, and Minister for Port and Museums Kadannappally Ramachandran will address the seminar.
Minister for Local Administration K.T. Jaleel will inaugurate a seminar on minorities in the evening. Curtain will fall on the four-day conference with a public meeting to be held at Kizhakkethala. A red volunteer march will be taken out from MSP grounds to the conference venue ahead of the finale.
