The Max hospital here would soon start kidney transplant programme in the hospital. The Head of Department (HOD) of Nephrology Dr Puneet Arora told newsmen here on Wednesday said that about 10 percent of adult population suffers from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The causes of CKD are Diabetes, hypertension, stone diseases and some inherited abnormalities. “Because of progressive nature of illness, many patients ultimately develop End stage Renal Disease (ERD) when along with medicines, they require some form of artificial support in the form of Renal Replacement Therapy to remain alive and lead a fruitful life’’.
Transplant surgeon, Dr Waheed Zaman said that the numbers of kidney ailment patients are increasing due to use of unhealthy lifestyle, increase in average life expectancy of general population and better diagnostic facilities. “ Each year about 2.5 lakh new patients require Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) out of which only 50,000 are able to actually avail the treatment and less than 1 percent are being transplanted because of lack of awareness, poor healthcare infrastructure and unavailability of donors,’’ he said.
The Head of Department of Urology, Dr. Deepak Garg, informed about organ donation and associated misconception. “We need to understand that donating one kidney does not affect the physical abilities, quality of life or longevity of a person. Now a days donor’s nephrectomy is done by laproscopy which enables faster recovery and early return to work. Usually donor is discharged within 3 days after the operation from hospital to lead a normal healthy life without extra precautions,’’ he added.
