Radiologists stop fetal sonography

JAIPUR: A day after a radiologist was arrested on charge of being involved in sex selection, radiologists from across the state stopped conducting fetal sonography from Wednesday. Indian Radiological and Imaging Association, Rajasthan chapter issued appeal to all radiologists across the state to stop conducting fetal sonography. "We are not conducting fetal sonography from today. The decision has been taken not as a protest against the government but in fear of being arrested, " said Dr Dinesh Gupta, secretary, IRIA, Rajasthan chapter.
He said that if a tout or agent who accompany pregnant woman for sonography and assure her that he will reveal sex of the baby in the womb and he fooled the pregnant woman that he had talk with the doctor and he is saying it is a baby girl. The doctor has no idea what the person accompanying the pregnant woman is doing. In such a case, innocent doctor or radiologist also get wrongly trapped into it, he said.

He added that they will resume conducting fetal sonography only after they will get standard operating procedures by the government so that if the radiologists follow them they will not be arrested.
