In a bid to promote electric mobility, the Ministry of Power is in the process of acquiring five electric sedans by March 15.

These five cars will be provided to senior officials for use, said an official in the ministry adding the charging stations will be set up in the power ministry's premises itself.

With each sedan costing around Rs 11 lakh, the Power Ministry will also give some vehicles to other ministries on a cost basis to encourage their usage by officials.

The government is also working to establish charging corridors for these electricity-driven cars in urban areas in the coming days, said an official in the Ministry of Power.

Initially, the government may ask electricity distribution companies to set up charging stations on the corridors till private investors come to establish such station.

In the first phase, such corridors will be made in metro cities to promote electric vehicles and subsequently it will be expanded to other other cities, said the official.

The Ministry of Power is preparing guidelines and regulatory frameworks to deal with the issue of setting up charging stations and fixing tariffs, Power Minister R K Singh said recently while addressing a seminar here.

The guidelines will also include open access, not giving any cross-subsidy. The cost of charging stations will be derived by calculating the average cost of purchase of power, wheeling charges and margins, he said.
