Murshidabad, the district with the highest population of Muslims in West Bengal, will have a State-level University, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said.
Three other districts in north Bengal will also set up separate universities, Mr. Chatterjee said while referring to a note by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Various organisations, including the Students Islamic Organisation of India, were demanding a full scale university in the district for a long time.
70-year deprivation
State president of the body said that the government’s move to set up a university in Murshidabad has “ended 70-year deprivation of Murshidabad district.” The other districts to get a university are Darjeeling, Alipurduar and Dakshin [South] Dinajpur.
