Initiative to make schools centres of excellence

UL Education, an initiative of Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), will launch MAPLE (Madappally school academic project for learning and empowerment), a unique three-year project to convert into Madappally schools as centres of excellence.

The project will be executed at Madappally Boys and Girls High School, Madappally Boys and Girls Higher Secondary School, and Madappally Vocational Higher Secondary School. Education Minister C. Ravindranath will inaugurate the project at Madappally Government High School at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

According to Remeshan Paleri, chairman, ULCCS, the skill development programme was initially started at the Madappally school on par with the State government’s projects for strengthening general education for students from poor socio-economic background. Madappally school has been selected since majority of the students on the campus are from coastal areas.

The main aim of UL Education is to help the youth with outstanding skill development. The focus was on organising skill development programmes at State, national and international levels to improve the employability skills of the youth, he said.

T.P. Sethumadhavan, Director, UL Education, said the MAPLE project envisaged skill enhancement of teachers and students of the school. It aims to make teachers, students as well as parents aware of the changes that are happening in the field of education across the world. English communication, science, mathematics, social issues, commerce, business studies, and vocational subjects have been weaved into the project.

Training programmes will be held in association with British Council and other national institutes to improve the English communication and skills of teachers and students.

A batch of teachers had already been trained in the area of English communication. The project would also focus on career guidance classes for parents and students to facilitate appropriate decision-making process, he said.

Interventions will be made in areas like environmental protection, water conservation, waste management, public health, counselling, biodiversity park, yoga, stress management, palliative care, civil service exam preparations, art and culture, sports, athletics, fine arts, music and dance.

As part of the project, ULCCS will facilitate language labs, digital library, computer labs, and future technology labs to make children aware of the new technologies and encourage them to begin start-ups.

Similarly, infrastructure development projects will be completed with the help of local self-government institutions and the government. A stadium will be constructed at Madappally school.
