A total of 877 students from 301 colleges took part in ‘Scifuture 2018,’ the 32nd National Science Day, at the VIT on Wednesday. The students were from colleges in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
K.V.S. Sarma, research professor, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Science, Tirupati, inaugurated the event. He urged the students not to stop working hard. Engineers transform theories and knowledge into a useful product, he said. He spoke on the importance of research, according to a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, VIT chancellor G. Viswanathan, observed that policymakers of India, must give more importance to spending money on education and research.
He noted that China spent more than two per cent of GDP on research, while in India, only half per cent of the GDP was allotted for research. Quiz and poster competition and idea presentation were conducted as part of the celebrations. The external participants were taken out on a lab tour of VIT’s research laboratories and instrumentation centres. Anand A. Samuel, V-C of the VIT was present.
