Employee charged after allegedly embezzling $3.5 million from Perth bank

A 37-year-old bank employee has been charged after allegedly embezzling more than $3.5 million dollars in what police believe is an inside job.

The man was charged after his employer, a bank branch in Belmont, spotted a high value transfer and conducted an audit.

A number of discrepancies were identified during the audit and passed onto Major Fraud Squad detectives.

It's now been alleged between June 2016 and February 2018, the employee had stolen more than $3.5 million.

The man has been charged with one count of stealing as a servant, and will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday.
