Huawei MediaPad M5 first look: An attempt at reviving the Android tablet

Huawei was sure about not launching any smartphones at MWC this year, but it did go ahead and launch an Android-powered tablet called the MediaPad M5. Now, in India, we wouldn't quite agree with Huawei's decision to launch an Android tablet, but it might still be a trend in Europe.

Three models of the MediaPad M5 will be available.

The company has a huge market in Europe and is also the second largest smartphone brand there, right behind Samsung. Now, the MediaPad M5 comes in two variants and a total of three models. If that sounded a tad confusing, that it because it is. Simply put, there are two variants, the MediaPad M5 and the MediaPad M5 Pro. While the MediaPad M5 comes in two sizes, an 8.4-inch display and a 10.8-inch screen variant. The Pro on the other hand only comes in a 10.8-inch screen option.

Despite the difference in screen size, the tablets feature a resolution of 2560 x 1600, giving them a very high pixel density of 280 PPI for the M5 Pro and 359 PPI for the M5, higher than what you’d find on an equivalent iPad. These displays are covered by a 2.5D curved glass for a more premium finish.

The three tablets are powered by Huawei’s own HiSilicon Kirin 960 series chipsets and run Android 8.0 Oreo (EMIUI 8.0) out of the box. All variants of the tablet are available with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of storage, though the MediaPad M5 models include 32 GB storage options as well.

The MediaPad M5 features a capable set of cameras as well. The tablet gets 13 MP f/2.2 rear cameras and an 8 MP f/2.2 front camera.

The tablet also features speakers tuned by Harman Kardon which should take care of your audio needs. The 10.8-inch models, in fact, get four speakers for a more immersive experience, while only two on the smaller 8.4-inch model.

The battery should not be an issue either, with the smallest device featuring a 5,100 mAh battery while the larger two come with 7,500 mAh batteries. All devices are bundled with 9V / 2A chargers that support fast-charging standards.

The M5 Pro is unique among these devices as it supports the M-Pen and a Surface-style keyboard that can transform your experience to a desktop one. The M-Pen has 4,096 levels of sensitivity.

As far as pricing is concerned, the price of the 8.4-inch MediaPad M5 starts at €349 for the 4 GB / 32 GB RAM / Storage model with Wi-Fi going up to €499 for the 4 GB /128 GB LTE model. The price of the 10.8-inch unit goes from €399 to €549 for the similarly specced variants. Whether they will make it to Indian market though, is something we will have to wait and watch.
