Corruption watchdog widens probe into disgraced cop's online world

Victoria's corruption watchdog has widened its investigation into the online trolling by a top integrity policeman to include whether his conduct affected investigations into racism and anti-discrimination allegations.

In a statement on Thursday, Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commissioner Robert Redlich QC said Operation Turon will examine former assistant commissioner Brett Guerin's conduct in posting inappropriate material under various pseudonyms on social media.

“It will also examine the extent to which Mr Guerin’s conduct, in his role as the head of Professional Standards Command or otherwise, may have affected the investigation and outcomes of matters where racism and other potential breaches of anti-discrimination or human rights law may have been relevant," Commissioner Redlich said.

The investigation will also assess the strength of relevant police policies and procedures to strengthen ways to prevent misconduct, the statement read.

IBAC's powers include the ability to investigate police misconduct where members fail or refuse to perform duties, behave disgracefully or improperly on or off-duty, discredit other officers, bring the force into disrepute or affect public confidence in Victoria Police.

“Given the serious nature of the reported conduct, the level of concern expressed by the community is understandable,” Commissioner Redlich said.

“Victoria Police is fully co-operating with IBAC’s investigation and providing every assistance requested.”

Mr Guerin's 40-year career with the force came undone on Monday night when he resigned after The Age published details of racist and obscene posts he had made under the pseudonym "Vernon Demerest".

Anyone with specific information or evidence relevant to this investigation is asked to contact IBAC at www.ibac.vic.gov.au or 1300 735 135.
