PSG star Neymar to head to Brazil for surgery on broken foot

Neymar will have surgery on his broken metatarsal at the end of the week.

The world's most expensive player suffered the injury during Paris Saint-Germain's win over Marseille on Sunday, leading to three days of speculation over how it would be treated.

The French Ligue 1 club have announced Neymar, who also has a sprained ankle, will go under the knife in his native Brazil later this week.

A club statement on the official website read: "In accordance with the player, it has been decided that Neymar jnr will undergo surgery in Brazil at the end of this week.

"He will be operated on by Dr Rodrigo Lasmar, accompanied by Professor Saillant, representing PSG."

PSG boss Unai Emery said on Tuesday that surgery was not a foregone conclusion after the French club tried to treat the injury conservatively, but after discussions with the medical team of Brazil's national team the decision to operate was made.

Neymar's surgery means he will miss the match against Real Madrid in the Champions League next Tuesday.

The 26-year-old was carried off nine minutes from the end of his side's 3-0 win over Marseille on Sunday, and his father Neymar snr said earlier on Wednesday it could be eight weeks before he plays again.

"His treatment will last six to eight weeks, whether there is an operation or not," he told ESPN FC.
