In a bid to curb pollution, reduce usage of carbon fuel and spread awareness about clean environment, the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) observed a ‘No Vehicle Day’ on Wednesday.
As PPT officials and employees went to office by walking and riding cycles, a comparative less rush and noise were marked on the roads in the PPT Township. PPT Chairman Rinkesh Roy led from the front by walking to the office all the way from his official quarters.
“The basic objective is to create awareness among the public and also reduce the traffic congestion and enable PPT officers and employees to play active role in controlling the global warming,” said an official release.
Not only PPT officials and employees, but also the Port Users gave their two and four-wheelers a miss for the day and opted for walking or cycling instead. Officials and staff of the Chennai Radha and the MCHP, PPT organised a rally laying importance on reduction of use of motor vehicles to reduce pollution. The rally, moved from the Officers’ Club Square to the Harbour, was flagged off by PPT Dy Chairman N Vaiyapuri. HODs of PPT planted saplings inside the administrative building premises. Speech and slogan competitions were held among officers and employees, and the winners were awarded. Swachh Bharat Awards were also given to local organisations, PPT Officers and Sections for the month.
The PPT move was lauded by locals, some of whom participated in the event by riding bicycles.
