Film Academy reportedly considering barring films in the Oscars race from competing for Emmy
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is considering the introduction of a drastic rule for future Oscars and Emmys contenders. According to The Hollywood Reporter, content creators might have to pick between vying for the Emmys and the Oscars, as a nomination in either of the categories would "rule out submitting to the other".

Multiple sources associated with the Academy have told the publication that the rule could come into effect from next year. If that happens, contenders will be required to accept an Academy nomination which would nullify their Emmy nomination in any category and vice versa.
If the creator does not respond to the Oscar nomination, then the Academy could have the power to completely withdraw nomination or even strip the creator of the win. Similarly, if a creator or a production land an Emmy nomination, it would automatically be eliminated from the Oscar race.
The Academy hasn't officially confirmed this change yet, as the issue has not been raised with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Therefore, right now, the discussion is still in a premature stage.
If the new rule comes into action after thorough deliberation, it would be formally announced before the 91st Oscars, just before March 2019, a source tells THR.
In the past, Netflix has benefitted the most from the cross-nomination policy in the documentaries category. The 2006 doc 13th and 2015 music biopic What Happened, Miss Simone? landed best documentary feature Oscar nominations and went on to win the Primetime Emmy for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special.
The Oscars committee thinks films and documentaries which vie for both the awards are diluting their brand. This apprehension reportedly spawns from Netflix's Mudbound receiving four Oscar nominations. The committee was concerned that after landing multiple nominations, the film could move on to Emmy nominations, weakening the frenzy around the Oscars.
