Pari, Veerey Ki Wedding, Red Sparrow, Lady Bird, Death Wish: Know Your Releases

This week, cine-goers will have a rather eclectic mix of films — both Hindi and English — hitting the screens across the country. Each of these films belong to diverse cinematic genres — supernatural horror (Pari), romantic comedy (Veerey Ki Wedding), spy thriller (Red Sparrow), comedy-drama (Lady Bird) and vigilante action (Death Wish). Most of these films have been been doing the rounds at various national and international film festivals; they have also earned some positive reviews throughout last year.

Pari

What's it about: Pari is a supernatural thriller starring Anushka Sharma who plays an abuse victim.

Who is in it: Anushka Sharma Kohli, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rajat Kapoor.

Why it may work: It stars the superstar Anushka Sharma and seems to be like a relatively scary movie, something that Bollywood hasn't delivered for quite some time. For anyone who is looking to watch a scary flick, Pari will prove to be the safe bet.

Veerey Ki Wedding


What's it about: When the most eligible bachelor in Delhi, Veerey, messes up his first meeting with the father of his beloved, he gets no blessing from his future the father-in-law. Making things worse is Balli, Veerey's elder cousin brother, who threatens the would-be in-laws with dire consequences if anyone dares to break Veerey's heart.

Who is in it: Pulkit Samrat, Jimmy Shergill, Kriti Kharbanda

Why it may work: Releasing on Holi, Veerey Ki Wedding will be a light and a fun watch for the family and the youngsters. Based firmly in romance and comedy, it could prove to be the perfect watch this weekend.

Veerey Ki Wedding is directed by Shashanka Ghosh.

Red Sparrow

What's it about: Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School,' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.

Who is in it: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts.

Why it may work: It stars the Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence and is based on a novel written by an actual CIA operative named Jason Matthews. Anyone who loves high action spy thrillers would definitely want to watch Red Sparrow.

Red Sparrow is directed by Francis Lawrence.

Lady Bird

What's it about: In 2002, an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.

Who is in it: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts.

Why it may work: Winning numerous accolades and earning an Oscar nomination for the Best Picture, Lady Bird will be an essential watch right before the Oscars on 4 March. Also, the movie has received high praises from across the globe for its portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship.

Lady Bird has been directed by Greta Gerwig.

Death Wish

What's it about: A family man becomes a vigilante killing machine when his family is violently attacked by robbers.

Who is in it: Bruce Willis, Vincent D'Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue.

Why it may work: Starring Bruce Willis, Death Wish will be a must watch for anyone who loves action packed movies. The movie also tackles the age old questions of vigilantism and how to see it.
