A female rhesus macaque which was entangled in a telephone line atop a nearly 80-feet tree outside Udyog Bhawan was rescued by Wildlife SOS on Wednesday.
The telephone line was wrapped tightly around the animal’s waist at the time of rescue. Currently under medical treatment, she will be released into the wild once deemed fit.
A call on the non-government organisation’s 24-hour helpline alerted its Rapid Response Unit to a rhesus macaque in distress outside Udyog Bhawan. The adult female macaque was stuck in the tree for nearly 72 hours before a passer-by contacted the police and Wildlife SOS for help.
Two Wildlife SOS rescuers along with nine Fire Department and seven police officers arrived at the spot for the rescue operation. After assessing the situation, the NGO team and a fire truck operator used an aerial ladder to reach the distressed animal. After removing the wire from around her waist, the team rushed the macaque to a care centre for urgent medical intervention.
‘Cuts and bruises’
Kartick Satyanarayan of Wildlife SOS said: “We are grateful to the Fire Department and the police for their support in this rescue operation. Our team had to act fast and remove the tight wire before it caused severe internal damage to the traumatised macaque. She has sustained bruises and cuts around the waist, and is currently under treatment.”
Rajesh Kumar Shukla, Fire Station officer, Connaught Place, said: “The area had to be cordoned off as a huge crowd had gathered to witness the rescue operation. Our ladder operator assisted the Wildlife SOS team to safety extricate the monkey out of the tree and we hope it recovers.”
