Land expropriation proposal 'smacks of politicking'

2018-02-28 14:26

Reading between the lines this is just another tool that the people in power want so they have another sword to hang over the general population's head.

The first powerplay started on the steps after the motion was passed, and it elicited some very worrying thoughts:

1)      As a leader who has pledged his support to the DA in PE, Tshwane and JHB, Julius Malema is now using his votes in these different metros as a sword to try and rein in any opposition from the DA on the subcommittee that is being formed to evaluate the proposal. What is our society coming to? Do the words honour and integrity not mean anything in present day SA?

2)      Malema stated that it is not only rural land to be expropriated, but urban land as well. That means that the land my house is on will no longer be owned by me.

2.1)  I will have to lease the land that MY house is built on at some as yet undisclosed fee. Is this in addition to the rates and taxes I already pay or instead of, who will determine what the lease amount is, does the lease money go to national government or to the metro where I am residing, etc. The list of questions/headaches goes on and on.

2.2) What happens when my lease period elapses? Is this automatically renewed or does the government reserve the right to terminate my lease? Even though I own my house, I cannot uproot it and move it to another section of land that the government allows me to lease…

2.3) What happens when I pass on to the next world? Will the new legislation allow me to leave my fixed assets (house) to my next of kin?

2.4) Without ownership how is any financial institution going to finance and purchases? The property market is going to fold, farmers will have no land to use as collateral when applying for loans, etc. The broader financial model used in SA as a country will implode. The government definitely does not have the money to finance everything, where will it come from??

The land audit that was done does not specify how much land is owned by the state at present, it only concentrated on land physically owned by the different ethnic groups. How then does expropriating land from everyone, including black property/home owners and giving it to the state rectify the land ownership issue?? Smacks of politicking to me. Too much power in the hands of a few, especially in Africa, smell of big trouble.

Rather do an audit that adds the state as a player in the ownership stakes before making irrational decisions that will surely put this country on a very steep road to disaster.

If this whole shebang goes the way that Julius envisages it, we will become nothing more than a quasi-communist state. He has also made it quite clear that the banks, mines, reserve bank, etc, should all be expropriated and fall under the state.
