The results of the bypolls in Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh will be declared today.
According to early trends, the Congress is leading in both the Assembly constituencies in Madhya Pradesh. In Mungaoli, the Congress is ahead by 21 votes in Mungaoli after second round of counting while in Kolaras, it is leading by 709 votes.
Both the Assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh were held by the Congress but following the death of sitting legislators, bypolls were announced.
In Mungaoli, the fight is between Brijendra Singh of the Congress and Bai Sahib of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Senior Congress leader and former minister Mahendra Singh Kalukheda, who was the Mungaoli MLA, died in September last year.
In Kolaras, Congress leader and sitting MLA Ram Singh Yadav died of a heart attack in October last year. The Congress, in a bid to garner sympathy votes, has fielded Ram Singh Yadav's son Mahendra Singh Yadav from Kolaras. Devendra Jain is the ruling BJP's candidate in Kolaras constituency of Madhya Pradesh.
It is a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress in the bypolls ahead of the Assembly election in Madhya Pradesh scheduled later this year.
The voting for the bypolls took place on Saturday, with a voter turnout of 77.05 per cent in Mungaoli and 70.4 per cent in Kolaras.
