Bescom opens automated system to spot, fix power outage in real-time

Bescom on Wednesday opened a real-time and automated system that would quickly detect the problem spot and help its staff restore power supply in no time.

The state's first centre for distribution automation system (DAS) was opened at HSR Layout, where it would cover 11kV 120 feeders at the division and would benefit five lakh Bescom consumers.

Designed by the Portuguese company Efacec, DAS can track and assess power flow on real-time through feeders, distribution, direction and centres, which would enable it to identify the precise point where the problem has occurred in power supply and fix it immediately.

Without such a system, the staff would take long to locate and fix the issues, said Rajendra Cholan, managing director, Bangalore Electricity Supply Corporation Limited.

Cholan also added that the energy department is planning to open 11 DAS stations across the city, for which mapping has been done and testing is under way. He also said about 3,130 relay spots have been identified in the city.

Bengaluru is the first city in Karnataka to have DAS, which is funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica).

Besides quick power restoration, DAS will help optimise existing distribution network, improve reliability of power supply, besides ensuring highest quality of service to the consumers.

Energy Minister D K Shivakumar inaugurated the DAS station and Belaku Bhavan, the new Bescom office complex at KR Circle.
